The Installed Base Strikes Back

September always feels like a reset

As teams return from summer and planning cycles restart, the conversation shifts from vision to execution. This year, something else stands out: many of the most interesting developments are no longer centered on AI models, but on what happens when intelligence meets the systems already running the world.

Manufacturers are talking about operational performance rather than algorithms. Smart machines are inheriting cybersecurity and compliance requirements once associated with infrastructure. Energy leaders increasingly see intelligence and power systems as interconnected rather than separate challenges.

Across sectors, attention is shifting from intelligence itself to the environments in which it must operate.

For the past two years, the conversation focused on what AI could do. Now the harder question is:

How does intelligence become part of the physical systems already running our factories, utilities, transportation networks, supply chains, and critical infrastructure?

The future is not being built alongside industrial systems.

It is being built inside them.

Market Signals
  • Energy and intelligence are converging. Power systems are increasingly becoming intelligent systems.
  • Smart machines are becoming infrastructure. Cybersecurity, resilience, compliance, and lifecycle management are becoming core product requirements.
  • Manufacturing buys outcomes, not algorithms. Throughput, uptime, safety, workforce productivity, and energy performance matter more than AI labels.
  • Autonomy requires trust. As systems take on greater operational responsibility, reliability becomes inseparable from intelligence.
What Is Happening?

A year ago, conversations about AI centered on models, benchmarks, and capabilities. Today, those same conversations lead quickly into power, cybersecurity, operational performance, workforce constraints, and resilience.

The technology has not become less important. It has moved closer to the realities of the physical world.

That changes the opportunity.

The challenge is no longer simply teaching a machine to perform a task. It is enabling the vast installed base of industrial equipment and infrastructure to perceive changing conditions, make decisions, coordinate across systems, and continuously improve.

The real Physical AI opportunity is not creating a handful of intelligent machines. It is making millions of existing industrial assets more intelligent without requiring the industrial world to start over.

Takeaway

As intelligence becomes embedded into industrial operations, the installed base takes on a different role. What many viewed as legacy infrastructure is becoming the platform through which intelligence enters the physical world.

The installed base is not the legacy. It is the foundation for the next generation of autonomy.

Portfolio Signals

Across our portfolio, we see intelligence moving deeper into operational systems, infrastructure, and physical assets:

Agtonomy launches new autonomous equipment capabilities. New autonomy features, including fully autonomous multi-point turning, move agricultural equipment closer to hands-free operation.

DataHow joins the Horizon Europe iNDUCARE consortium. Participation alongside leading partners highlights growing adoption of data-driven approaches in advanced bioprocessing.

Fixposition collaborates with Penn Engineering and Built Robotics. The project underscores the importance of precise positioning for autonomous construction equipment and Physical AI systems.

HighByte introduces agentic Industrial DataOps. New modeling agents help manufacturers contextualize industrial data faster using natural language.

Litmus featured in Intel's Edge AI Catalog. Intel recognized Litmus as a verified Edge AI application for manufacturing environments.

Xage expands its Critical Asset Protection platform. The enhanced offering extends protection across AI systems, cloud services, and industrial infrastructure.

Building the Next Generation of Industrial Leaders

Momenta Doubles Down on the Installed Base

This month we increased our investment in DataHow, HighByte, and OctaiPipe.

Each represents a different path toward the same outcome:

helping industrial assets become more adaptive, efficient, and autonomous.

From biomanufacturing to industrial data infrastructure to energy optimization, they demonstrate why we believe the installed base has become innovation's largest opportunity.
